Einwohnern, Hauptstadt des brasilianischen Bundesstaates Pernambuco, wurde 1537 von den Portugiesen gegründet, 1630-54 war sie als Mauritsstad unter dem Generalgouverneur Moritz von Nassau Hauptstützpunkt der Holländer, die den Portugiesen die Alleinherrschaft über Brasilien streitig machten. 1710 von Mauricia umbenannt in Recife, seit 1823 an Stelle von Olinda Hauptstadt des Bundesstaates Pernambuco, der als einer der ärmsten in Brasilien gilt. 1930 überquerte LZ127 „Graf Zeppelin“ erstmals nonstop den Südatlantik vom spanischen Sevilla nach Recife.
