Das Projekt war behaftet mit Vorwürfen von Betrügereien. Nichtsdestotrotz wurde 1874 ein Teil des Schifffahrtskanals vollendet. Der Kanal ließ auch Schiffe durch, die bis zu 4 Fuß Wasser verdrängten. 1886 war der Violet Canal errichtet. Die St. Louis, New Orleans and Ocean Canal Transportation Co. baute mit Hilfe von Geldern des Staates Louisiana eine 20 Fuß breite Schleuse über den Kanal.
