In Paris gründete Jean-Louis Perin 1846 eine Fabrik für Holzbearbeitungsmaschinen, in die 1867 der junge Rene Panhard und 1872 der Ingenieur Emile Levassor eintraten. 1875-79 baute man dann auch Gasmotoren. Freundschaftliche Beziehungen der Familie Levassor zu Gottlieb Daimler führten zu einem Lizenzbau des Daimler-V-Motors ab 1890. Gleichzeitig entstand bei Panhard & Levassor - noch vor Peugeot - das erste Automobil Frankreichs! Damit nach Daimler und Benz der dritte Autohersteller der Welt. 1897 starb Emile Levassor, die Firma wurde eine Aktiengesellschaft. Sie operierte später erfolgreich im Rennsport.
