Er gründete die bekannte "Buick Motor Car Company" in der Autostadt Detroit. Als einer der ersten Firmen schloß sich Buick der 1908 von W.C.Durant gegründeten General-Motors-Gruppe an, nachdem Durant schon seit 1904 Mehrheitsaktionär bei Buick war. Bald danach verkaufte Buick seine Autofirma, um sein Glück in der Ölindustrie zu suchen, leider ohne Erfolg. Der große Automobilpionier verstarb als armer Mann.
